behind the surface
Description
I chose the dining table as a central piece in our everyday lives, it\'s the meeting point for family, friends, even business sometimes.

You can\'t always notice so easily, what is going on in the mind of the one face to face with you.

LED\'s are inlaid in the tabletop, almost imperceptible, as well as sensors to measure the skin resistance. This is a very simple technique to draw conclusions on the emotional state of a person. As the person is in an excited, relaxed or maybe angry mood, a small microcontroller will activate the LED\'s and patterns evolve, changing in brightness and growth depending on the intensity of the incoming signal.

This is not about telling exactly what someone thinks, it\'s the fact that there is more than meets the eye at first sight.

The additional level of communication, offers the possibility to look behind the surface and enables you to peek into the emotion of yourself and others.

Novel idea. It may not be too useful in hostile take over situations or at a poker game, but perhaps as a device for marriage counsellors or psychologists. It may even have a powerful use by designers as an ethnographic research device for focus groups or surveys... I could use something like this on occasion to clarify the true feelings of focus groups while testing design. If you took the concept of some form of sensor the monitored stress levels, or basic emotions, and used that in places such as military training, or other areas where non-obstructive testing would be beneficial to the user and the commander or foreman, having a simple colour based chart by which to tell who is performing at optimum emotional levels, would be a great help. it could be used in factories at repetitive stations to work out when someone needs a break so they are not just taking breaks when the clock tells them too and working through emotional downs where production and concentration are both bad of the company and the worker. The workers day could be tailored each and every day, and hour to the emotional state of the worker for maximum productivity and happiness. howman
its like a new lie detector test haha Classic
Very good idea. I saw an interview on TV this morning where a translator was needed as the interviewee did not speak the same language than the interviewer. If you had such a thing, the audience could get a better understanding of what the interviewee says since the spoken word by the translator does not provide the full spectrum of communication the interviewee actually provides. (What a sentence...) diplomod
nice idea! it might be better however, to associate the emotion with different colors, not patterns. people are more in tune with colors showing feelings. patterns would have to be learned by the user. Jehan
