Idea Details
light rock
Description
Light rock seeks to add a physical semantic, slightly playful interaction, and movement to desk lamp to create a stronger emotional connection between the object and user. Through the act of rocking the lamp toward one\\\'s self, actively enagaging it, the light is activated by means of a mercury switch and acknowledges the user through light. When the user is ready to say farewell, he or she simply rocks the lamp back into it\\\'s non-engaged state until you wish to interact again.

Very intuitive! diplomod
cool. perhaps you could use the same tech as in the iPhone, some form or accelerometer with a mercury switch to account for it\'s location as well as the attitue which which it was moved into place by the user. A violent movement would be reflected in aggressive lighting while softer motion would create softer lighting. howman
Howman, I was going for something very simple/clean/low tech, but I really like your thinking and that would most definitely bring a broader sense of emotion into the product. riddickuliss
Don\'t use mercury switches, in some states here in the USA, use of mercury switches has been made against the law (no more mercury switches in trunk lights or visor mirrors for example). If there was a way to slide the light up and down, you could base the brightness level on that. LED Head
Thanks for the heads up and the idea LED Head! Surely there is a simple way to achieve the same effect as a mercury switch without using mercury. riddickuliss
Base as a giant button ei - good idea mate giorgio789
Yes, there are alternatives to mercury switches, they have what they call ball switches that have a metal ball in a case (it is very small) that rolls across contacts. Also they have a system that provides a linear output, so as you tilt more, you get more output, so you could use something like that to adjust the brightness. LED Head
Thanks Giorgio! @ LED Head Awesome! Thanks for the input and new kernel of knowledge! riddickuliss
@LED Head - I have had some bad experiences with ball switches in the past. They have the tendency to bounce inside their casing causing. This sudden on/off/on isn\'t in itself a huge problem visually, but it does put a shock on the electronics and lights at times if it is not accounted for and smoothed out in the circuitry. howman
Funky :) bahars
As far as the ball switch goes, after further thought, I am thinking that using hall effect switches would be the way to go with this. Way cheaper than an accelerometer. LED Head
You have got a point there... I also think they are using a new material in mercury switches now... I don\'t think it is harmful... howman
They have hall effect sensors now that are low cost and not just off / on but can give a voltage output that is linear to the strength of the magnetic field for like 25-35 cents. Isn\'t tehcnology awesome? LED Head
WOW ... yes indeed, you guys are awesome as is the technology you speak of! riddickuliss
