Lallang Wind Lights

Description
View the video of the wind lights in action at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-A18Umw0des

Lallang is a long weed that grows in abundance in untended grass fields. In a strong wind, fields of lallang will ripple like waves. The proposed installation is based on the concept of making visible the invisible wind blowing through fields of lallang.

LEDs are mounted underneath flexible arcylic rods affixed to the ground. Any gentle swaying of the rods in the wind will trigger the LEDs, lighting up in a brief flash the entire length of the transparent rods. In a large scale installation, the effect of a gentle breeze lighting up numerous reeds like sudden fireflies in the dark will make the viewer profoundly aware of the unseen wind.

I made three test light prototypes. You can watch how they light up in the youtube link posted above. (Please note, these prototypes are works-in-progress. The lights in the video are not waving in the wind. I have a fan blowing at them.)

great idea i have the same concept of make visible the invisible coni
I think when you put a couple of hundreds of theese in your garden it looks extremely cool during the night! Nice idea! diplomod
very cool joehanson
that is a really cool idea actually! i like this idea of light swaying back and forth in the wind... Laralubilu
I would love to have them in my garden! petra
Its a really nice idea. where you inspired at all by the dune light produced by Roosegaarde studio? http://www.studioroosegaarde.net/work_html.php?id=24 ChrisNatt
wicked, reminds me of a simplier idea that a company i worked for did : http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/windtolight.html anything that converts wind into free lighting is amazing jonny_725
How many would you supply in a set? ChrisNatt
solid prototypes, u thought of powering them thru either solar or wind to heighten their elemental value? scribblist
you might try using thin acrylic rods or tubes... i think the tubes would give a better light especially if you coated the inside in a silver paint. much the same way fiber optics are created. howman
You might try finding a supplier of optical grade acrylic rod. Not sure where you are located, there is a company in Ohio called United States Plastic that has clear acrylic rod that is for decorative use or for manufacturing in production of high quality clear acrylic products. It will not warp, crack, craze, or corrode when subjected to prolonged exposure outdoors. It meets FDA standards and is UV stabilized. Catalog page P-162. We used it and blasted green light down the rods and put it in lakes and oceans...man did that ever attract the fish! user not found
This is nice, I would love to see this in a warm color. You could definitely get a commission to install this in front of a museum or some large civic building user not found
it is a very beautiful idea! user not found
It would be interesting to see this as a large installation like a field of light set into a cement sidewalk where pedestrians have to push their way through the tall grass so to speak. It would be a cool metaphor. howman
Maybe add color changing based on the season, white for winter, green during the summer. user not found
Someone did some really cool stuff like this with neon tubes under high power electricity lines... Because of the electrical leakage, there was enough free power to light them up when they were stuck into the ground. howman
I wonder if you could use this principle to do the same thing only working with LED\'s. howman
One of the coolest designs on here. I would love to see a \"field\" of these swaying and glimmering in the wind. a large enough area would have beatiful waves passing through it from the wind user not found
well done. congratulations. howman
Beautiful! I thought this idea could also work when turned bottom-up: as a glowing wind chime, flashing light instead of sound. This way it could visualize wind motion even on a smaller scale - not everyone has the space for a field of lallang on his balcony ;-) user not found
hypnotic ideea, it reminds me of a \"anemonas\" proposal submited in the Velux competition a few years ago. was that also yours? user not found
