Description
What about a lamp that is climbing on the wall or moving in the garden using 2 suckers (suction cups) the way that the leeches move ... or using that sticky material that howman is talking about. It could make a move in about 15 minutes ... that will make this a lamp that will take you by surprise every time you enter in the room or walk in your garden
That slow move will make you conscious about the passing of time ... just measure the distance whit your eyes.
Whit some phosphor glowing liquid ink can leave snail like traces on the wall ... showing the ephemerity of light and time ... like again howman perfectly pointed.

Photovoltaic cell for charging and a simple chip and mechanism to make the moves and the LEDs go mad :)

It can show you with light if there is to be rain ... if in the garden at night.
It can be seen in colonies ...
Maybe if in shape of a sphere or a snake it will not have problems whit the terrain.

You could add other feedback, based on time of day, ambient temperature, relative humidity or barometric pressure. It could start out higher on the wall during the day and go down closer to the ground later at night (like the sun setting). On a large enough surface, if it had some sort of way to determine where movement was coming from, it could slither over to where the action is. LED Head

I think having mechanicals wouldn\'t be the way to go... perhaps think about how liquids move against gravity and work from that angle. howman
Or use some of that muscle wire and have it wiggle like a caterpillar along the wall. LED Head
Maybe also use some sort of microscopic velcro type material so it can cling to different surfaces like catepillars do? LED Head
Muscle wire it is now... lol... I may have mentioned the Gekko on the glass thing in another idea thread... that may work for what LED Head is suggesting here. howman
