User responsive lighting environment
Description
The Light Tile is a user responsive lighting system. It consists of wall mountable tiles illuminated by OSRAM diodes. The tiles also contain a microphone and infrared motion sensor. Movement and sound cause tiles to illuminate based on the level of activity in the room.

These aren\'t just lights that turn on when you walk by. The brightness of the light tiles is dependent on a combination sound level, movement level, and simple behavioral rules. These inputs result in a smooth, organic lighting experience. It feels as if your house knows what light you need before you do.

For example, Light Tiles need both sound and movement to illuminate. This way, a family watching TV (sound without movement) will not cause the lights to come on. Someone getting up quietly in the middle of the night (movement without sound) will not light the room either.

Tiles can also be activated by user command, through claps and taps. This way, an entire room can be illuminated with a clap of the hands, or a single light can be lit with tap to serve as a reading light.

nice idea. well thought out. I am working on something like this for my house right now, although I am not going to use sound or motion but RFID tags to turn lights on and off depending on the room I am in... I may have to rethink some of my designs. :) thanks. howman
If you have RFID tags you will need a reader in each room, which i assume is much more expensive than a motion detector. you may want to go with a occupancy sensor switch, which are very common. they use a combination of ultrasound and infrared to turn the lights on with any motion. the advantage of RFID of course is that each user can be identified and have a custom scheme for them. what happens when 2 users are in one room, i don\'t know.
