Idea Details
Mango Solar Lamp
Description
Imagine lots of fruits hanging in your backyard, moving softly along with wind and trees. As the sun sets, fruits would start glowing, giving your space a whole new and warm atmosphere for the rest of the night.

This idea of a solar LED lamp came up as a simple solution to exterior and/or interior lighting, taking advantage of the abundant solar energy of lower latitudes; the same energy that gives us and endless summer and an infinite variety of tropical fruits all year long here in Colombia.

The inspiration is obviously the mango, which grows across the countryside and cities of the Caribbean, along with many other tropical fruits.

Two ways of production:

The Totumo is one of those other fruits, a very particular one that goes extremely hard and durable once dried. It grows in a friendly oval shape that resembles a giant mango.

The Totumo has been used for centuries as tableware, for beverage containing, and also by artisans as it can be carved, cut and painted in many ways. This possibility could allow customization and mean more income for less advantaged artisan communities of the region.

For mass production where Totumos do not grow, the same mango shape can be achieved with regular blow molding, using recycled PET from beverage bottles.

Recycled PET plastic also means income for the poor. In many developing nations, recycling and garbage classification is not made by the state or companies, but by informal recyclers who had proven to be able to feed their families and send their children to school, only by selling recyclable material back to the companies; that would be the case with recycled PET bottles in those areas.

These guys are a significant labor and ecologycal force, so their right to work and way of subsistence is starting to get protection by the law in Colombia, and the plastic for \'Mango\' would mean more opportunities for them.

All of this, plus LED technology and flexible solar panels, makes this hangable product very profitable, ecofriendly, social responsible, and a funny choice for lighting our spaces.

Nature synergy:

Friendly Hanging. Trees wont suffer. Mango doesnt need any wiring or nailing.

Exterior lighting tends to attract bugs in tropical nights. Many get trapped in other ovalshaped lamps as they cannot escape the same way they got in. But with this lamp, every bug can escape without harm through the bottom hole, and the LED light wont let them get overtanned!

Intersting idea, I like the thought of using recycled PET plastics. LED Head
cool idea. I like the fact that you use recycled PET bottles for the shape...Perhaps you could spec. in some compounds so that when your product is through it\'s life cycle it will break down in the ground without processing... howman
wow that was quite fast hehe.. thanks for your comments! I will consider your idea howman. Thanks! cao_miguel
I prefer this recycled perspective. durica
I like the concept of the lamp as it integrates in a natural environment and the friendliness to the environment. Very good description and visualization btw! diplomod
Hehe i think the presentation has still some details to be improved but thanks! I\'ll keep working on it!... and yes! the idea was to get the more nature synergy and the less impact as possible, in conceptual, productive and functional ways. cao_miguel
Hey howman! I\'ve done some research, and acording to Wikipedia :P biodegradable plastics are sort of expensive, and release greenhouse gases once degradated, so I think their ecologycal footprint is bigger than the use of recycled common plastics that have already gone thru several lifecycles, they\'re cheap to recover and to recycle. But I\'ll keep looking around for other possibilities with your suggestion. Thanks! cao_miguel
There is some interesting research being done in Alberta on waste management and using all waste as recyclable for product production... howman
Do you have any link to that? cao_miguel
