Synthetic Sun
Description
An image of a pleasing scene is used as an alarm clock or as room decoration.

The scene could be a projected still image, projected video footage, or a textured painting that is lit by LED spotlights.

Embedded within the scene is a high-brightness LED, that is meant to merge into the scene as a representation of the Sun. This LED produces a light bright enough to be therapeutic. I would use an Ostar LED such as an LE W E3B with an appropriate luminaire. The luminaire would mix the colors and spread the light to a wider area and narrower viewing angle. This would reduce the glare to safe levels when viewed close-up, while projecting the bright light to a distant viewer such a person in bed.

It would be nice if the \\\\\\\'sun\\\\\\\' could be adjusted, in at least two ways. The first adjustment would be the direction that the light projects, so that the bright light shines at a selected location in the room e.g. the bed. This could be easily arranged by a ball-and-socket pivot. The second adjustment would be the collimation angle versus emitting area, (conserving etendue, of course). For near viewing, the area would be small and angle large, but for distant viewing the area would be larger and the light more collimated. Another adjustment that would be nice would be the position of the \\\\\\\'sun\\\\\\\' within the image, to simulate the movement of the real Sun across the Sky. In a projector system, the image itself could move. Otherwise, the LED luminaire could be arranged on a track or pivoting arm... although this would add cost and possibly noise/reliability concerns.

The image could be framed as a virtual window, or the entire room could be projected or painted as a virtual scene.

The brightness and color of the bright LED in the image could be varied in co-ordination with projected footage to simulate a sunrise, sunset, or shading by clouds. Illumination could be programmed to occur at a certain time, as for an alarm clock.

What do you exactly mean with a therapeutic light? Like the scenery thought. diplomod
Might want to consider using OLED technology for backlighting, according to an article in LED Magazine, Th e unique features of OLED lighting are inspiring the imagination of designers, who are exploring various OLED lighting applications: windows, curtains, automotive light, decorative lighting, and wallpaper. By therapeutic I was referring to a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD), light with illuminance 2500 - 10000 lux (lumens per square meter). Also, \'dawn simulation\' is reportedly more effective than other types of light as a treatment for SAD.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_simulation howard
Thanks for the thought, [LED Head]. I had in mind to use a projector based on an Ostar or similar LED, but an OLED screen would work too. howard
[diplomod], further on the theme of being therapeutic.. the pleasant scene itself is claimed to speed healing. See the chapter \'Light, emotion, and design\' in the book \'Design and Emotion\': http://books.google.ca/books?id=1POCnLfJ87EC&pg=PA48&lpg=PA48&dq=light+emotion&source=bl&ots=k-ijYD8_MX&sig=JbCgbf57GRvkW1aiIl4xNUMrcoM&hl=en&ei=v1ApSrveNoyQtAPevujjCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#PPA51,M1 howard
Such a window light might be useful in hospital recovery wards. JohnG
Oh yes, OLED would be great here like most other places... Thank you for the link to the book howard. howman
very interesting. brings a realistic sense of lighting to a projected image. maybe every morning the scene could change to vary the experience? Jehan
